Sama's settlement is located on the outskirts of Baqubah city in Diyala Governorate, Iraq. Mariam was displaced from her home due to conflict. "It's been a year," says Sama, a 13-year-old girl who fled her home last year. "I came here with my mother and sisters. My father is dead, killed by ISIS. I have four sisters and two younger brothers. When we first came, we were scared and had no one to rely on." Mariam is one of 5,017 children living at this site, most of whom need some kind of support. This need has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The children have spent extended periods in the area, with very little opportunity to interact with peers and participate in group activities, severely impacting their psychosocial well-being. High unemployment rates and the cost of living caused by the crisis have also exacerbated protection risks, while access to legal aid and community support has declined due to movement restrictions and service disruptions. Consequently, displaced children at the sites have been disproportionately affected by child protection risk factors.

Today, the Bothoor ALkhaer Relief and Development Organization signed an official contract to implement a large-scale community awareness campaign on the social security system in Iraq. This campaign is funded by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and in cooperation with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs. The partner is the Iraqi Unified Medical Association for Relief and Development. The campaign aims to raise public awareness of the importance of social security and the rights of workers, with a focus on marginalized groups such as informal sector workers, returnees from displacement, youth, and people with disabilities in Diyala Governorate, particularly in urban and agricultural areas and returnee communities. Bothoor ALkhaer Relief and Development will implement the campaign in Diyala Governorate. The campaign will continue until December 31, 2025, and includes planning, production, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation phases, according to a precise timeline.

The Role of Society in Protecting Women Protecting women is a shared responsibility between individuals and institutions, through: Enacting strict laws and legislation that criminalize all forms of exploitation and guarantee women's rights. Raising community awareness through awareness and education campaigns that encourage respect for and empowerment of women. Supporting women economically by providing fair job opportunities and ensuring a safe environment for them. Achieving social justice begins with protecting the groups most vulnerable to exploitation, and women are no exception. An informed and advanced society is one that protects women's rights and gives them the opportunity to contribute to building the future without fear or exploitation.
